28th Annual Greater Lafayette Holocaust Rememberance Conference

Teacher's Workshop

The 28th Annual Greater Lafayette Holocaust Remembrance Conference, “Resisters, Rescuers, Refugees,” will highlight the courageous resistance efforts of Jewish partisans and the extraordinary rescue efforts of individual Jews and non-Jews alike. Several films about resistance and rescue during WWII—some documentaries and some major studio productions such as Defiance—have recently been released, and this year’s Holocaust conference will be enhanced by a presentation of these films. At the Conference on March 29, Dr. Peter Fritzsche from the University of Illinois will discuss the failure of German citizens to resist the Nazis, and three Holocaust survivors will tell their stories of revisiting their hometowns in recent years. On April 7, McCutcheon High School students will be presenting Life in a Jar, the story of Irena Sendler’s rescue of 2,500 children from the Warsaw ghetto, to area school groups.

Of particular interest to educators will be a presentation on Sunday afternoon, March 29, in the Stewart Center at Purdue University by Mitch Braff, executive director of the Jewish Partisan Education Foundation in San Francisco, CA. (www.jewishpartisans.org). Mr. Braff is a documentary filmmaker who founded the Jewish Partisan Education Foundation in San Francisco to tell the story of the 20,000-30,000 European Jews who escaped the ghettos and death camps and joined partisan groups that resisted and sabotaged the Nazis. Mr. Braff has produced nine films on the subject and served as an advisor to Defiance. Mr. Braff will describe the Jewish resistance during WWII; his presentation is scheduled for approximately 3:00.
